As we spring into the month of May, we know everyone looks forward to warmer weather and the final marking period/semester of the school year. This also means we are getting close to exam time. We know our students are super busy studying and preparing and may be feeling anxious or worried. We believe with a bit of planning you can head into exam time feeling calm and confident. Below are our top 5 exam prep practices to get you in the right headspace for test-taking.
Find or create a quiet and calming study space
Make sure you find a spot where you won’t get easily distracted. Your study place doesn’t have to be your bedroom or dorm room. It could be a garden, the library, or really any quiet place you feel you can concentrate. And if you are studying at home, be sure to set boundaries with family or roommates to not disturb you while you’re working unless it’s an emergency.
Fuel up with the right foods and be sure to hydrate
This may seem obvious but making sure you are properly fueling your brain and body with lots of healthy foods and liquids is important for staying focused. The brain is comprised of 85% water, so you need to make sure your body is getting an adequate amount of hydration so you can stay focused longer. Making healthier choices, such as foods that are known to improve focus and concentration make great snacks. Consider preparing blueberries, avocado, or a salad of leafy greens to nosh on before or during a study session, these foods are known to help you keep center your attention.
Plan ahead and get organized
One of the most effective tips is to study in blocks of time, 50 minutes being the most effective, and planning a 10-minute break in between. Use these long blocks for problem-solving tasks, reading, and writing. Then use shorter blocks of time for reviewing your notes or memorizing materials. There are many study planning apps you can use or even create your own plan. Don’t forget to schedule breaks. Breaks are just as important as they help prevent fatigue and keep you focused. You can even schedule taking a sip of water.
Get lots of rest and make time for relaxation
We know it’s hard to not worry as exam time creeps upon us, however, we want to remind you that rest, in particular sleep, is very important. After every study session, your body needs time to recharge. This helps ensure you’re able to think clearly throughout the day. Make sure to schedule a time to wind down before sleeping so that you release any stress or excitement.
Keep a positive attitude
The right attitude can help get the successful results you prepped so hard for. By looking at the glass half-full, you can help manage any stress and even boost your immune system. Walking into an exam calm and in the right state of mind will allow you to focus, make better decisions, and recall information more easily.
